I’m back in Sydney now after a brief, but incredibly inspiring, trip to the Northern Territory. The main purpose for the trip was to visit the 30th Telstra NATSIAA (National Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Art Award) Exhibition. The NATSIAA’s are one of Australia’s premier art awards and recognise the important contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders make to the Australian art scene. The Territory plays such a major role in supporting and celebrating the Indigenous art and culture, the number of galleries and art spaces is just phenomenal! The exhibition didn’t disappoint, so if you’re heading to the Territory, make a beeline for this exhibition, it’s open until November 10. If you can’t, check it our here: NATSIAA Exhibition.
The winning entry by Jennie Kemarre Martiniello, Golden Brown Reeds Fish Trap, was inspired by traditional weaving and is made from hot blown glass.
Here’s a list of my favourite galleries from this trip:
Tiwi Art is an alliance between the three art centres on the Tiwi Islands: Munupi Arts & Crafts, Tiwi Design and Jilamara Arts & Crafts.
Maningrida Arts & Culture (MAC) with its reputation for quality, diversity and integrity, is one of Australia’s largest and longest running art centres.
Nomad Art This diverse gallery specialises in limited edition prints and carries a unique range of jewellery, textiles, books and sculptures… The textiles, of course, were of great interest to me. Check out their online store. I dare you to leave this gallery empty handed!
Outstation carries a broad range of Aboriginal artwork and represents 15 remote community art centres from the Kimberley, Central Australia, the Western Desert, South Australia, Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land.
So there you have it… my faves. You could spend a week in Darwin and only visit galleries, there are just so many to choose from… but then why choose??!!
